7th Grade Course Syllabus
Welcome students and parents to 7th grade Math! I wanted to use this letter to touch base with parents and let them know what to expect in the upcoming year in Math.
Below are some specifics on procedures in 7th grade math.
Grades- Grades are meant to represent a student’s knowledge of grade level material. Therefore, grades in Math will consist mostly of test scores and independent study assignments. Occasionally, there will be small projects that will be part of their grade.
Tests- My goal is for students to be successful with the Ohio Learning Standards for 7th Grade Math. For this reason, students will be given a study guide for most tests. In addition, students are permitted to retake all tests. In order to retake a test, students must have completed all of the assignments (with work) for that test. Before retaking a test, students will also be required to complete an intervention assignment on the topic to ensure they’ve improved what they know on that particular topic. Students will be responsible for retaking tests during their Academic Assist Period. In order to keep students on pace with the rest of the class, test retakes have to be completed in a timely manner. Students typically have three school days to complete the intervention assignment and test retake. The highest score of the two tests will be counted towards the student’s grade. All test and retake test dates will be posted on the board in class.
Homework- Just like anything in life, in order to get better at something, practice is required. Homework is for the student to practice the skills they will need to be successful with grade level content. My intent is for most of the assignments to be completed in class, so that students can get assistance if needed. However, if a student does not finish their assignment during class time, it then becomes homework and will have to be finished during Academic Assist or at home. Although calculators are sometimes necessary for certain assignments, remember to encourage your child to do as much as possible of their homework without a calculator and to show all work.
Independent Study Assignments- I will be using an internet based math program to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom. This will be another opportunity for students to show what they know about grade level content. Therefore, these assignments will be part of their grade. Like homework, students will be given class time to complete these assignments, however, there may be times they have to finish these assignments outside of class. This can be done during Academic Assist or at home.
Books/Folders- Students will be required to have a MATH FOLDER. This folder can be a 3 ring binder or a simple pocket folder. This folder should be used for math papers only. Any notes taken throughout the year should be kept in this folder. All in class and homework worksheets will be kept in this folder as well, but will be cleaned out at the end of each unit. Additionally, students will be provided a Math Workbook, as well as, access to an online Textbook program, that will supplement the topics covered in class.
Students: If for some reason you are not at school all lessons can be found in your Math Google Classroom. It is your responsibility to complete any of the assignments you missed while you were out.
Any time throughout the school year your child has questions on content covered in class, please encourage them to come to me for help. I am willing to help them during class and Academic Assist. Likewise, you can email at (chwhite@nlsd.k12.oh.us) with any questions or concerns you may have now or throughout the year. I also want to encourage you to take advantage of the Parent Portal. Parent Portal allows parents to view their child’s grades online. Information about the Parent Portal can be obtained by contacting the secretary in the office. I am looking forward to a successful year of 7th grade Math!
